Have Fun, Make Stuff Up, Boost Your Creativity, Build Confidence…

If you’re not familiar with Improv, it’s as old as Greek theatre, but gained modern popularity with “Whose Line Is It Anyway.”

Essentially, we make stuff up on the spot, without a script – scenes, games, monologues, sketches – usually based on a single suggestion. Some Improv groups even create entire plays!

That might sound a little scary but you improvise every day with everyone you meet. We’re natural-born improvisers. In our Improv, the principles are similar, we just take it a step further.

And Improv is massive, massive fun!

You don’t need any previous experience in improvising, acting, drama, comedy or any other ‘performance art’. The workshops take place in a fun, friendly and supportive environment where you can be yourself, play and have fun.

And while we’re having fun, we’re learning new skills which can be used in all forms of creativity as well as life itself!

People do Improv for all sorts of reasons. Because of the skills we develop, improvisers are often quick-witted (I could be the exception here!), more gregarious and fun to be around. People like improvisers.

Improvisation makes you more spontaneous and builds confidence in all walks of life. It helps whenever you need to be in front of an audience from teaching to public speaking, from acting to spoken word such as performance poetry and storytelling.

It enhances your creative muscles, too, so you can quickly forge connections between apparently unconnected ideas.

Improvisers are helpful and supportive, and work well in teams.

These are all side-effects of the Improv process which is probably the most fun you will ever have in a workshop. Have we said that already?

And, if you wish, you can work as a group and perform on stage. This is probably the most fun you can have, legally!

The Go Improv Workshop runs over 8 consecutive Tuesdays, from 7 – 9 PM, starting on the 28th February.

If you can’t make a Tuesday, please Message Ian Waugh to register your interest for future sessions on alternative days.

Each week will build on previous weeks. We’ll practice all the basic Improv skills using fun games and exercises, and explore aspects of Improv such as characterisation, reaction, status, mime, platform building, storytelling, heightening and more.

We have a super rehearsal space in Commercial Union House in the middle of Newcastle: 6th Floor, 39 Pilgrim Street, NE1 6QE. It’s just down from where the old Odeon cinema was, across the road from The Tyneside Cinema.

Because our aim is to encourage Improv in the area, we want to keep costs ultra low. It’s such a brilliant, all-encompassing activity – and fun! Did we say that? – and we’d like to see Newcastle full of improvisers – it would be twice the fun city it already is!

The total cost for the 8-week course is only £40. That’s about 4 – 5 times cheaper than London prices.

And, of course, you get to work and play with lots of super Geordies!
